Grange Street Lofts, St Albans Conservation

St Albans, Hertfordshire

This RIBA Award winning scheme makes best use of an old light industrial printing shed. A Locally Listed building set within the St Albans Conservation Area allowed us to explore dynamic lofted interiors using natural daylight and bold architectural shapes. Fishpool Street St Albans

These concept designs are for a small land locked site in the St Albans Conservation Area and Article 4 designation. The form of the house responds to boundary alignments which in turn creates private garden areas for all of the rooms in the house. Careful positioning of windows avoids issues of overlooking whilst making the most of natural daylight so that sunshine enters the plan of the house at high level, changing as the day goes by. The arrangement of  living space positions a spacious kitchen/ family room above the main reception all linked to an upper level west facing garden patio. We also really like the separation of living spaces and private spaces, the surprise created by the double height living space, the inverted plan and the intimate individual gardens.

Fry/Gropius New Works

With Listed Building and Planning Permission granted 2016, this very rare opportunity looks at improving the setting of a Grade 11* 1928 Maxwell Fry house in Hertfordshire. The house was designed at the time when Fry shared his studio with Walter Gropius of the German Bauhaus movement. The work involves removing some unslightly ancillary structures and creates a new living space accessed via a subterranean link. Working with English Heritage the scope additionally involves the careful restoration of the original windows and interior features. The new fully glazed extension building features renewable ground source heating and cooling together with specialist glazing with translucent interlayers. Work starts summer 2017.

Hertford Theatre

Refurbishment
Castle Hall Arts Performance
Hertford, Hertfordshire

Castle Hall Arts Performance building is remarkable for its stunning setting and its opportunity for refurbishment. The truncated forms of this brick and zinc monolith are sited adjacent to Hertford Castle, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Alongside runs the fast flowing River Lea. We won a limited competition for the refurbishment of the interior and exterior elevations. We have promoted ideas for accessibility, transparency and breathing new life and uses into the public foyer spaces. The designs incorporate a new flexible arts exhibition space, an internal café and multipurpose room. We have tried to make theatre of public spaces whilst enhancing the experience of an evening out.

Modernist Mansion

Malaga
Featured on C4’s Grand Designs

Gil Briffa proudly claimed on the Channel 4 TV show ‘Grand Designs Abroad’ how there was no “refuge for the imagination” when his ideas on colours met resistance in Spain.

Kevin McCloud said of the house “If there is genius here it is in the way the design takes some simple modernist shapes and with light and shadow has fun with them. The question as to whether it fits in with its surroundings has to be asked… the answer is yes it does and not least because great architecture always embellishes the landscape. Ultimately, it is glamorous, exciting and it makes you feel good just being here, and as a retirement home it’s just what Gil and Hilary wanted”.
